The Final Countdown was a moderate success at the box office. It was set and filmed on board USS Nimitz (CVN-68), filming operations of the modern nuclear warship, which had been launched in the early 1970s. The film was produced with the cooperation of the United States Navy's naval aviation branch and the United States Department of Defense. Kaufman also served as an associate producer and had a minor acting role. Produced by Peter Douglas and Lloyd Kaufman (founder of Troma Entertainment) and directed by Don Taylor, the film contains an ensemble cast starring Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, James Farentino, Katharine Ross and Charles Durning. Or any kind of forbidden fruit associated with social stigma. The Final Countdown is a 1980 American science fiction war film about a modern nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that travels through time to the day before the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. Think romeo/juliet (who knows, maybe suicide included, hence the 'final' part). forbidden love theme, anyone? :) Just thought about it. It's the final countdown - time to go, stressed by many, many repetitions With so many light years to go and things to be found I'm sure that we all miss her so - leaving their old lifes behind, but still excited for the things to come 'Cause maybe they've seen us and welcome us all, yea - 'they? Aliens? Or just the people surrounding them? The fact that they're not sure if 'they' would welcome them suggests that this might not be tolerated by other people We're heading for Venus and still we stand tall: venus as 'love'? They're standing tall - so they're proud It's the final countdown - well, it's the final countdown, man, time to go, no point in staying here Will things ever be the same again?: the journey probably will change them forever/ nothing will stay the same (again, it can go sour) I guess there is no one to blame We're leaving ground: this can't be helped - this is something they have to do Maybe commiting suicide together?Īnd maybe we'll come back To earth, who can tell?: this journey will set them apart from the world they currently occupy - but it can all go sour, and they'll be back to their old lifes - if the suicide is the option, there's a possibility that they will be helped in time Maybe a man and a woman, maybe two men or women - going somewhere (maybe metaphorically, don't know yet). We're leaving together - but still it's farewell : two people. Venus - common symbol and goddess of love In other words, the final countdown is really about an intergalactic mission to Venus and the toll that it takes on the crew and their families back on earth, pretty sad, huh? I'm sure that we'll all miss her so: Now they comfort each other about their loved ones and spouses back on earth. With so many lightyears to go They remember that it will take along time to get to Venus.Īnd things to be found (to be found) But they are still excited and hopeful for what they'll find on the planet We're heading for Venus (Venus): Now they reveal their destination, the planet Venus.Īnd still we stand tall: They are all trying to stay professional and collected.Ĭause maybe they've seen us They speculate the presence of alien life and wonder if they are expecting them to arrive.Īnd welcome us, all yeah: But they try and remain positive and hope that they will not be hostile and instead welcome them. The final countdown The same as the previous verse It's the final countdown: This is from back down on earth when the rocket was still on the launch pad and the countdown began, one of them must be remembering it. Will things ever be the same again?: They are all getting panicky and sad as the rocket continues to leave earths atmosphere and they wonder if their destination will be similar to earth We're leaving ground (leaving ground): They are now taking off from the launch pad and are one again scared about leaving I guess there is no one to blame: Now they are kind of mad and looking for a solution, but ultimately decide that it's no ones fault. To earth, who can tell?: But they are still scared and aren't certain they will ever return to earth We're leaving together: This means that a crew of astronauts is leaving earth in a spaceship/shuttle to another intergalactic locationīut still it's farewell: This means that while they are all hardened astronauts, they are still scared and hesitant to leave earth behind.Īnd maybe we'll come back: This means that while they all are sad about leaving, they still hold out hope that they may someday return I mean, we all KNOW it's about space and travel, but here's a full breakdown of each verse and their meaning. Ever wondered what the meaning to Europe's hit song "The Final Countdown" actually is.
